Emergo: The Metamorphis of Medusa
This piece was created for an exhibition called 'Behind the Smile', highlighting issues behind hidden illness. Emergo (emerge) is my interpretation of mental illness (depression and anxiety) and the struggles and demons people have to conquer, or, learn to live with. Medusa is embroiled and weighed down by many ornately laden snakes who are chained and bound together. Some are even fighting each other, whilst others look quite docile and even carry snake head orchids. An eclipse is high in the sky above a temple ruin and the halo around Medusa's head has the following inscribed "Luctor et Emergo" - which translates into "I struggle and I emerge"; showing the strength and courage of all sufferers of mental illness.
