The Alkonost

Alkonost's exist in Russian folklore, they are birds with the heads of beautiful women. If you hear their magical song when they sing, you forget that you even exist and disappear. I think that Alkonost's are very similar to Harpy's in iconology.

I wanted to make my Alkonost into a traditional Russian Princess with her decorative headdress and jewels.

The used a scratchboard technique to create this piece, by painting an artboard with black ink and using fine scrapers to reveal the white.
